Junior Certificate of Education Program (JCE)
What is the Junior Certificate of Education?
The Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) is a holistic tool designed to map student’s progress towards achieving the college’s values, against three domains, throughout the foundation years of secondary schooling (Year 7, 8 and 9) at Meridan State College. The JCE is awarded to students who have demonstrated capability across all three domains including Academic Success, Supportive Environment, and Community Involvement.
The purpose of the JCE program is to:
• Provide a clear line of sight for students to reflect on their performance, setting short and long term goals leading into the Senior QCE focus.
• Establishes a culture of building personal skills and knowledge over a period of 3-4 years as student’s transition from primary school to Junior Secondary through to Senior Secondary.
• Encourage, recognise and celebrate cumulative and holistic growth,
development and achievement.
• Establish a consistent language and approach to student performance conversations and reflection that helps to strengthen education partnerships (Students, Teachers, Community Leaders, and Parents/Carers).
Key Milestones – Junior Certificate of Education
Students must accrue a minimum of 16 points per year across years 7, 8 and 9 to achieve the Milestones leading into the Junior Certificate of Education. The goal for students is to aim to achieve 4 points/term to be tracking to obtain their JCE and be invited to attend the incentive excursions at the end of each year. Students are able to achieve the Platinum Level for each milestone by accruing 10 points in each domain. Each domain consists of areas, which students can individually set goals in consultation with their Mentor Teachers to improve and achieve within their years at Meridan SC.
Positive Community Involvement
JCE tracks student’s holistic growth across 3 domains. Community Involvement is one domain that encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities that helps them learn the values of competition, teamwork, individual initiative, group responsibility, sense of community, endurance, diversity and even interpersonal communication skills.
Any activities that our Junior Secondary students are involved in outside of their normal classroom, can convert to points towards their JCE.
Once an extracurricular activity is completed, whether at school or out in the community, students can convert their effort in to points by sending an email through to our JCE hotline, outlining their involvement in the activity, along with sending evidence of their participation.
*** Please note, this is the student’s responsibility to complete. ***
JCE Community Involvement email address is; JCECommunityInvolvement@meridansc.eq.edu.au
For approval, students must include the following information;
• Name of activity and/or organisation
• Description of your involvement
• Start/Finish date (include approx. amount of time involved)
• Evidence of your participation that could include photos, certificate, etc.
Positive Incentives
At Meridan State College, we encourage students to continuously strive towards excellence and to develop themselves as lifelong creative learners. In order to promote this development in our students we seek to celebrate excellence and implement a consistent approach to positively re-enforce the behaviours we work to develop in our students, in line with our College Vision and Values. The journey as student through secondary schooling at Meridan SC is about taking personal responsibility, setting and working towards achieving goals, seeking and taking the opportunities to learn, diversifying, finding a passion, and in doing so achieving personal excellence standards. Our Student Recognition Framework outlines our current recognition strategies that has a focus on building Excellence and Supportive Environments.
The JCE aligns with these guidelines and offers students incentives to strive towards obtaining their JCE each year throughout their Junior Secondary journey.
