Meridan State College is a P-12 College with over 2600 students attending in 2015. Emphasis within our extension programs is placed upon students’ engagement with higher order thinking skills underpinning academic achievements and promoting their problem solving capacity to further develop inductive and reasoning abilities.
We aim to focus upon learning essential skills which include inquiry, research, enrichment and thinking rich routines, as students are encouraged to develop their unique potential through pursuit of both personal and academic excellence. Our curriculum is designed to engage extension students with differentiated learning opportunities based upon an appropriate level of challenge and achievement.
Qualified and experienced staff deliver stimulating programs which are rigorous, supportive, and flexible as they account for student variance in skills, interests and abilities. Parent partnership is encouraged as both families and school mutually support extension curricula. Students are offered opportunities to participate in enrichment programs within the College and externally; through competitions, community networks, advanced educational institutions and mentors across key learning areas.
A variety of options are offered within extension programs to include pursuit of autonomous learning through our Ignite Ideas program; participation with like-minded ability students in master classes within Literacy and Numeracy; explicit teaching of targeted groups; tutoring options; as well as in-class alternatives – all of which provide for students to achieve within activities that are commensurate with their academic ability.
Our extension programs offer greater depth and complexity within learning whilst also enhancing a sense of accomplishment for our students. We aim to motivate our extension students with the autonomy to benchmark their skills and abilities and to extend their interests and knowledge beyond the College as our philosophy is based upon ‘learning today and creating tomorrow’.
