Academic Academy

The Academic Academy is Meridan State College's academic extension program.  It is designed to engage like minded students, who are driven in the pursuit for continual growth and to achieve the highest academic success.

The program focuses on developing 21st Century Skills, specifically high order thinking strategies, critical and creative thinking skills, as well as developing communication skills.  These skills are developed within the curriculum contexts of English, Humanities, Mathematics, Science and Languages. 

Our Academic Academy provides opportunities for young people to learn and grow in ways that acknowledge and respect this unique and special phase of their development.  Students are encouraged and supported through learning opportunities that ignite their passion, developing their potential so that students can choose their future pathways.

English and Humanities

Curriculum programs have been developed to ignite students' passion in the areas of English and Humanities.  This learning program will leverage off the Literature strand of the Year 7 and 8 English curricula to teach the skills of language and literacy.  The Humanities program will focus on developing the inquiry skills from the year 7 and 8 Humanities curriculum to critically analyse source material and use evidence to support their thinking within the Humanities subjects of History, Geography, Civics and Business.

Mathematics and Science

Curriculum programs have been developed to ignite students' passion in the areas of Mathematics and Science.  This learning program will focus on the Problem Solving and Reasoning skills within the Year 7 and 8 Mathematics curriculum to develop mathematical thinking.  In Science, students will develop their scientific investigatory skills to contextualised the four strands of Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Earth/Space Sciences.

Languages

The Italian program has been developed to ignite students' passion in the area of language.  The program develops students' communication skills in both written and oral language.   The program focuses on social interactions using a secondary language (Italian), communicating factual information in spoken, written and multimodal texts.  Students will reflect on intercultural experiences to gain a deeper understanding of the Italian culture and will develop their ability to translate texts from Italian to English and vice versa.
