Learning Through Nature: Reggio-Inspired Art in the Early Years
We have recently introduced Reggio-inspired art classes for our Early Years students at Meridan, creating rich opportunities for creativity, curiosity and connection with the natural world. Grounded in the belief that children are capable, curious learners and that the environment itself can act as a teacher, these sessions invite students to slow down, observe and respond thoughtfully to their surroundings.
Our Year 1 students recently participated in their very first lesson, learning beneath the branches of a tree. Immersed in a natural setting, they looked closely and began to notice details they might otherwise have overlooked — the intricate textures of the bark, the varied shapes of the leaves, the way light filtered gently through the canopy, and the striking contrasts of shadow and colour on the ground below. Through questioning and wondering, students developed both artistic skills and a deeper sense of attentiveness.
Using their observations as inspiration, students then drew and painted what they could see, capturing nature through an artist’s lens. Each artwork reflected individual perspective and interpretation, celebrating creativity while strengthening visual literacy and fine motor skills.
These engaging art lessons are thoughtfully facilitated by our talented Mrs Purdie, who creates meaningful opportunities for students to explore, reflect and express their ideas. We look forward to seeing our young artists continue to grow as they observe, imagine and create.
